Established in 1920, Modern School Barakhamba Road has been synonymous with holistic education coupled with Indian ethos. It was to execute this dream envisioned by Lala Raghubir Singh, that his father, Lala Sultan Singh, a prominent businessman of Delhi, donated his sprawling mansionin Daryaganj for the cause.
Lala Raghubir Singh was the spirit and the soul of the school. As the primary Founder of the school, he left no stone unturned to ensure the realisation of his dreams. He teamed up with Sardar Sobha Singh, a renowned contractor instrumental in building New Delhi, to build a legacy that continues till today in the pristine glory of the environment. To implement his ideas, Mrs Kamla Bose came from Calcutta to take over as the first Principal of the school
Barakhamba
On April 28th 1921, an application was made to the government for a suitable site for the school in New Delhi. The building in Daryaganj was proving to be inadequate for the growing needs of the school.
In response to the application made, the government decided to allot a plot of 50 acres of the Cantonment Road for the school. The place, however, was considered too far out for the Old Delhi Boys, so the government was requested to select a more suitable site near the new city. It was intended to build the school in North Delhi and provide accommodation for about 200 resident boys with staff quarters and ample playfields.
