Dr Vijay Datta (2014 – Present)
President’s National Awardee, Shiksha Rattan
Dr Vijay Datta, BSc, MA (Eng), MEd, PhD in education, GOC-in-C Commendation, President’s National Awardee, Shiksha Rattan has almost three decades of experience in the public school circuit. A major part of this was at MAYO COLLEGE AJMER. Having secured a PhD in Modern trends in Education- ‘A detail study of Life Skills and Emotional Intelligence as a correlate of Scientific Attitude’, he was instrumental in bringing the concept of Life Skills to the country besides propagating the idea of Emotional Intelligence and Scientific Attitude. He was awarded Shiksha Rattan for his remarkable contribution to the field of education.
Dr Datta was the ‘Dean’ and ‘Housemaster’ at Mayo College, Ajmer. He has a total of 32 years of experience in the public school circuit. During this period Dr Datta successfully completed the skills development programme in Technology based Learning. He conducted numerous seminars and courses. He also trained teachers as Master trainers and conducted workshops for teachers on Dyslexia. Dr Datta served as a resource person and an expert for various workshops and seminars at the Regional Institute of Education, Ajmer, a constituent unit of NCERT. Besides being in charge of debates and Editor of various publications he directed several plays. He also organized various cultural and sports activities. Dr Datta was supervisor of various games and sports. His passion however remains Horse Riding, Tennis, Golf, Parasailing and Flying Micro light aircrafts. Dr Datta, is also the Vice President of Delhi Lawn Tennis Association (DLTA). It is the Premier body for tennis in Delhi State and responsible for popularizing and promoting the sport of Tennis.
During Dr Datta’s tenure at APS Dagshai the school was recognized amongst the top residential schools of India. Under his stewardship, the school was rated as the number ONE residential school in the country on the parameter of value for money. Under his able guidance the school participated in and won many prizes in various sports and co-curricular activities at the district, state and national levels. With Dr Datta at the helm the school recorded an unprecedented rise in academic performance index. Not only he has enhanced the academic standards but with due emphasis on co-curricular and sports gave the school a true Public School character. Dr Datta deeply encouraged the values of humanism and compassion in his wards. He initiated programmes in Adult Education and AIDS Awareness. He also nurtured the quality of empathy towards the lesser privileged.
It is in recognition of his sterling service towards education and character building that Dr Datta was decorated with the Army Commander’s Commendation for Distinguished Service.
Currently, Dr Datta heads Modern School, Bakarakhamba Road, New Delhi for the seventh year running. Dr Datta has been active with Round Square Conference activities for a long time, He has attended several Round Square Conference programmes including the Round Square Conference Summit at Cape Town, South Africa. He has been on an exchange programme to the Townley Grammar School, London and for his contribution to School Education, he has been adjudged the ‘Principal of the year’, by the Indo British Business Forum, London.
Dr Vijay Datta was awarded the ‘President’s National Award ’ by the Vice President of India, on behalf of Mr Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, who later felicitated the Award Winners at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. This award was recommended by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Department of School Education and Literacy, in recognition of Dr Vijay Datta’s valuable services to the community as an educator of outstanding merit.
Dr Vijay Datta received the ‘Award of Leadership’ for being an exemplary Educational Leader, in the British Parliament, London, United Kingdom. The event was organized by the University College, London and the Award was given by Mr Virendra Sharma, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, House of Commons, London and Member of the International Development Committee. He is an executive member of IPSC 2020.
Dr Vijay Datta attended the Round Square Head’s Symposium from 9th January to 12th January 2020. The Symposium was held at County hall, Westminster, London, UK. He received the coveted King Constantine Medal on behalf of Modern School, Barakhamba Road. Dr Datta spoke about Humanity and Community Service, stressing upon the humane perspective of leading life in his address to the august intelligentsia group comprising Heads’ of Round Square from all over the world at London.
